“JOHANNESBURG — Diarrhea kills 1.5 million young children a year in developing countries — more than AIDS, malaria and measles combined — but only 4 in 10 of those who need the oral rehydration solution that can prevent death for pennies get it.

“All the attention has gone to more glamorous diseases, but this basic thing has been left behind,” said Mickey Chopra, chief of health at Unicef, which is trying to put diarrhea back on the global health agenda. “It’s a forgotten disease.”

Over 50 students volunteered on Halloween night to collect food for the Provo Community Action Food Bank. It was a great example of how Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF has empowered generations to make lasting change in their global community. Thank you to all those who participated!

On Wednesday October 7, 2009 BYU//unicef made its first Trick-or-Treat presentation to elementary school students in Sandy Utah.

Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF was started by Reverend Allison over 60 years ago. It has since inspired a nation to think beyond its borders, encouraging Americans to see all children as equally deserving of a childhood. In his footsteps, tens of millions of Americans followed, helping UNICEF to save the lives of more children than any humanitarian organization in the world.

As you may have seen in yesterday’s New York Times, UNICEF has announced that the number of children under the age of five dying each day from preventable causes has dropped to 24,000. Only three years ago, 25,500 children were dying each day. Just imagine—now 1,500 more children are surviving, playing, laughing, growing every single day.

BYU//UNICEF was a visible presence at this years BYUSA sponsored “Involve-a-Palooza.” BYU//UNICEF club members were hard at work recruiting amongst the 34,000 students at Brigham Young University. “Learn more about saving children’s lives,” shouted one member while others shouted “believe in zero!” BYU//UNICEF will be involved with three anchor programs: Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF, BYU Snowflake Ball and the Tap Project. On June 19-21, 2009, the 2009 leaders of the BYU UNICEF club, Cami Rooney, Janise Anderson, Brad Stringfellow, and Michael Williams, attended the 2009 UNICEF Campus Initiative Leadership Summit in New York City at the U.S. Fund for UNICEF’s headquarters. It was three intense days of training covering all aspects of the Campus Initiative movement. The conference was organized around the goal that no children should have to die from preventable causes. Each day, 25,000 children die from preventable causes and UNICEF will work until that number is zero. The summit provided UNICEF Campus leaders an opportunity to share best practices, participate in skill building and knowledge building workshops, and bring the most recent resources for UNICEF Campus Clubs back to their communities. Cami Rooney, 2009 BYU UNICEF President commented that “it was an amazing opportunity to advocate for the day when zero children die from preventable causes, and work with others who are doing the same on campuses all across the country. I was very excited to represent BYU, and meet so many dedicated students who are making a difference.”  Brigham Young University was among the 32 colleges and universities represented at the conference.  Skyler Stevenson, 2007/09 BYU UNICEF President also attended as part of the UNICEF staff organizing the conference, as well as a member of the Campus Initiative National Council.

The semester has finally come to a close. So many wonderful things have been accomplished this year thanks to you! Please come to our last meeting of the semester! We will be discussing this years and next years projects, hearing from the always entertaining Warner Woodworth (our amazing faculty advisor), and enjoying pizza! 

Maybe it has been awhile since you came, but make an effort to come on April 15th. We will be planning for next year!
